Some of the most common questions answered

What makes Ruff Start Dog Training different?
Answer:
I specialise in rescue dogs and focus on teaching owners how to understand and communicate with their dogs — not just training the dog itself. Every session is personalised, practical, and designed for real-life situations. My goal is to give you the skills and confidence to continue training long after our session ends.
Do you only work with rescue dogs?
Answer:
No — I work with all dogs. However, I have a strong focus and extra experience with rescue dogs and the unique challenges they can bring.
How does the 1-to-1 session work?
Answer:
You’ll get a 3-hour intensive session where we:
-
Assess your dog and situation
-
Work through key training techniques
-
Build a clear plan tailored to you
You’ll also receive:
-
A written training plan
-
2 weeks of WhatsApp/video support

Where does the training take place?
Answer:
Training usually takes place in your home or local area so we can work in the environments where your dog actually struggles.
How long does training take?
Answer:
Training isn’t a quick fix — it depends on your dog and your consistency. My goal is to give you the tools to see progress straight away and continue improving.
Do you use positive training methods?
Answer:
Loaded question — The word positive in dog training just means adding. I focus on clear, fair, and effective training methods that build trust and confidence.

What if I’ve tried training before and it didn’t work?
Answer:
That’s very common. Training often fails because it’s not tailored to the dog or the owner. I focus on practical, realistic solutions that fit your lifestyle.
I’ve just adopted a rescue dog — when should I start training?
Answer:
Straight away — but gently. I’ll help you understand how to settle your dog in properly and avoid common mistakes.
What should I bring or prepare?
Answer:
Just your dog, some treats, and a willingness to learn. I’ll guide you through everything else.
Will you train my dog for me?
Answer:
No — Hill I will die on... You need a relationship with a dog to train them. I don't have that, you do. I train you to train your dog. This creates lasting results and a stronger partnership.

Can’t I just watch YouTube videos?
Answer:
You can — but they’re generic a frankly insane number of them many of which seem to contradict each other. I give you a plan tailored specifically to your dog, your home, and your situation.
What if it doesn’t work?
Answer:
Training only works if it’s followed consistently — that’s why I include support after the session to help you stay on track.
Do you judge owners?
Answer:
Never. I became a dog trainer because I struggled with a dog of my own. My job is to help, not criticise. Everyone starts somewhere.
What’s your goal with every client?
Answer:
To leave you feeling confident, capable, and clear on exactly what to do next.

Do you run group classes?
Answer:
Great question — and the short answer is no.
A slightly longer explanation: I actually love well-run classes. They can be brilliant for a dog’s mental stimulation and for developing strong social skills in a structured environment.
However, in reality, it’s very difficult for owners to commit to weekly sessions. Holidays, work, and everyday life often get in the way — which means attendance becomes inconsistent. When that happens, the group dynamic constantly changes, with new dogs coming in and others dropping out, and that can negatively impact the overall training experience.
Because of this, I (reluctantly) chose to focus on 1-to-1 training instead. This allows for consistent progress, a calmer learning environment, and a plan that’s fully tailored to you and your dog.
